a journey to Leh, India

on the way to phey

Along the Indus river from secmol

on the way to phey which is a very old village

and is the closest village to secmol

there is a sacred area with many stupas or shrines

some of these monuments have at their base stones inscribed with sacred mantras

this sacred area is just below the buddhist monastery in phey

which has a school for monks

I am also teaching a few classes at the gyudzin monastery

the student monks

wear the traditional red robes

have shaved heads

and study all day

just like you would think

however these students range in age from eight or ten

to twelve or fourteen

here is my math class

using some tools I brought to teach fractions

here is my science class doing a hands on experiment with seeds and soil

now I do not get an assigned parking space in the teachers lot

but the class size is great

and one of the students brings tea during math class

but it is not all academics and prayer at the school for young monks

the kids enjoy a game of cricket after school
